Ukraine Itinerary
Thursday, May 22 We'll begin our journey with a flight out of
O'Hare this afternoon. (We will travel as a group by VanGalder Bus to
Chicago...cost not included.)
Friday, May 23 We arrive this afternoon in Odessa, clear
customs and embark onto our boat. We'll have a delicious dinner and retire for
the evening. (B/D)
Saturday, May 24 After a delicious breakfast, we have a city
tour of Odessa; the country's largest seaport. It also is a city that had more
charm than any other city in the Russian Empire and it is probably still true
today. Tonight there is an optional classical music performance. (B/L/D)
Sunday, May 25 This morning we will tour the tidy city of
Sevastopol with its whitewashed buildings and stone forts. Of special interest
is the city's involvement in the Crimean War. The Russian and Ukraine fleets
remain anchored here. We'll visit the Panorama Museum depicting the 349 day
siege of the city. After dinner you may choose to be entertained by the Black
Sea Fleet. (B/L/D)
Monday, May 26 - Today is a day trip to Yalta. It was here at
Livadia Palace that Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill shaped the face of post war
Europe. we'll see the beautiful coastal gardens. You'll really enjoy the
beautiful scenery in this seaside town. (B/LD)
Tuesday, may 27 - Today, you'll have two optional tours from
which to choose. One is to Bakchisarai to see Khan's Palace with its intricate
designs and minarets. Here also is Uspensky Monastery, the gold domed church,
whitewashed monks' cells, a healing fountain and filed mosaics all clinging to
the hillside. For many Chufut-Kale is the highlight as it houses a honeycomb of
caves and structures where people too refuge. It also has a truly breathtaking
view into the valley below. The other optional tour is to the ancient Greek city
of Chersonesus where Volodymyr the Great was famously babtised as a Christian,
thus launching the Russian Orthodox Church. Its magnificent cathedral was
restored in 2004. (B/L/D)
Wednesday, May 28 Today we learn more about the area we
travel through as we arrive in Kherson, which is attractively situated at the
mouth of the Dnieper river. Our boat trip along the river delta includes a
special picnic lunch. (B/L/D)
Thursday, May 29 This morning we arrive in Zaporozhye for a
city tour. Of special interest is Khortitsa Island; the biggest island in the
river and home to the original Cossack tribes. We'll learn all about their
history and heritage. You might enjoy seeing a Cossack horse show this evening.

Friday, May 30 We celebrate the Ukrainian National Day with
wine tasting and a walking tour of Kremenchuk; an important industrial city and
important to meat and milk processing as well as many other types of
manufacturing. It is here that a hydroelectric power plant has created over a
2,000 square-kilometer lake. (B/L/D)
Saturday, May 31 Today we are in Kaniv. We'll visit the
museum and tomb of famous Ukraine poet, T. Shevchenko. Today we will also visit
a Ukrainian farm to hear about agriculture in the area and how it is surviving
the world markets. (B/L/D)
Sunday, June 1 We arrive in Kiev this morning for our city
tour. We will see the many original mosaics and frescoes of St. Sophia's
Cathedral, the site of coronations; the gold-domed blue church of St. Michael's
Monastery; Independence Square, site of the Orange Revolution; and the Golden
Gate. This afternoon we will discover why Kiev is called the breadbasket of the
USSR. There is an optional Ukrainian Choir concert tonight that you might enjoy.

Monday, June 2 After breakfast we'll visit on of the most
popular spots in Kiev, the 11th century Caves Monastery, a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Its gold-domed cluster of churches is a feast to the eyes and the underground
labyrinths lined with mummified monks are exotic and intriguing. We will see a
few of the interior areas which contain unique and ancient relics, as well as
having the opportunity to visit the sacred tombs. After lunch you may chose to
stroll through a living outdoor museum, Pirogovo, which depicts life back into
the 17th century. Tonight is our farewell dinner onboard our boat. (B/L/D)
Tueday, June 3 This morning we transfer to the airport and
stop in Vienna. We'll do a city tour and enjoy an evening concert of familiar
semi-classical music with players in period costume. (B)
Wednesday, June 4 We transfer to the airport to continue our
journey back to the U.S. (B/L)
